Tampa Bay Rays at Baltimore Orioles
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Brandon Lowe and Jake Mangum hit solo home runs, and the Tampa Bay Rays kept the Baltimore Orioles hitless through the first six innings in a 6-2 victory Wednesday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
After the Rays built a 5-0 lead in the seventh, the only suspense was whether starter Shane Baz and a host of relievers would combine for the second no-hitter in franchise history. Baz pitched four innings, walking three, and Edwin Uceta (10-3) and Garrett Cleavinger kept it going with a perfect inning apiece. But the Rays’ bid to complete the first no-hitter of 2025 ended when Tyler O’Neill led off the seventh with a line-drive single to center off Griffin Jax.
The Rays methodically built their lead, scoring one run in each of the first three innings, another in the sixth, seventh and eighth. They amassed 11 hits, with Lowe and Richie Palacios leading the way. Lowe went 2-for-5 with his 31st home run and two RBIs, while Palacios collected three hits and scored twice.
Tampa Bay struck immediately against Baltimore starter Tyler Wells (2-1). Chandler Simpson led off the game with a single and scored on Lowe’s double. In the second, Palacios doubled and came home on a double by Hunter Feduccia. Lowe then extended the lead to 3-0 in the third with his solo shot to right field.
Wells lasted four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four. The Rays added to their lead against the Orioles’ bullpen. An RBI double by Tristan Gray in the sixth inning that scored Palacios was followed by a run in the seventh on a groundout by Junior Caminero that plated Simpson. Mangum capped the Tampa Bay scoring with his third homer of the year, a solo drive to center in the eighth.
The Orioles, who were held to just three hits, avoided the shutout with a two-run eighth inning. After a walk to Colton Cowser and a single by Dylan Beavers, Jordan Westburg singled up the middle to score both runners. Baltimore’s offensive struggles were compounded by grounding into three double plays, snuffing out potential rallies.
Uceta earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief, striking out two. Beyond Baz’s four hitless innings, the Rays received scoreless relief outings from Uceta, Cleavinger, Jax and Pete Fairbanks.
The game took 2 hours, 30 minutes to complete and was played in front of an announced crowd of 18,367. The result improved the Rays to 77-81 on the season, while the Orioles fell to 74-84. The two teams conclude their four-game series on Thursday.
The final score of 8 total runs went over the pregame over/under line of 8.5. The Rays, installed as a -1.5 favorite, covered the spread. The outcome was a slight upset according to Interstat’s ELO system, which had given the Orioles a 52.3 percent probability to win, though Tampa Bay’s six-run output was close to the simulator’s projection of a 5-4 victory.
