Seattle Mariners at Houston Astros
HOUSTON (Interstat) — The American League West race will be on the line Sunday when the Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros conclude a pivotal three-game series at Daikin Park.
With just over a week remaining in the regular season, the Mariners (85-69) hold a one-game lead over the Astros (84-70). A Seattle victory would secure a series sweep and extend its division lead to two games, while a Houston win would forge a tie atop the standings.
The series has been dominated by pitching, with the Mariners shutting out the Astros in the first two contests. Seattle blanked Houston 4-0 on Friday and 3-0 on Saturday, holding a potent Astros offense scoreless for 18 consecutive innings.
“We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “Our pitching has been phenomenal, and we’re getting timely hits. We know what’s at stake.”
Josh Naylor provided the power in Friday’s win, going 2-for-4 with a home run. Bryan Woo and Eduard Bazardo combined for seven shutout innings on the mound. For Houston, Hunter Brown turned in a quality start Friday, allowing two earned runs over six innings with nine strikeouts, but received no run support.
The season series has been tightly contested, with Seattle holding a slight 7-6 edge. The teams last met in July, splitting a four-game set in Seattle that included an 11-3 Astros rout and an 11-inning, 7-6 Mariners victory.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Sunday’s contest projects to be a high-scoring affair with an 8-6 victory for Seattle.
Following the series, both teams embark on their final homestands. The Mariners host the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers for six games, while the Astros hit the road for three games against the Athletics before finishing with three against the Los Angeles Angels.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. CDT.
