Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Interstat) — The Boston Red Sox will look to build on their recent dominance of the Tampa Bay Rays when the American League East rivals continue their weekend series Saturday at George Steinbrenner Field.
The Red Sox (83-70) enter the contest holding a commanding 10-1 advantage in the season series, including a 5-0 record at Tropicana Field. The clubs opened the three-game set with a pitchers’ duel Friday, a game that was scoreless and suspended due to a malfunctioning roof. That game will be completed prior to Sunday’s scheduled series finale.
Boston has won seven of its last 10 meetings with Tampa Bay, with the Rays’ (75-78) only victory a 16-1 rout back on April 14. The last five games between the teams have all been decided by a single run.
The Red Sox are looking to stabilize after dropping two of three to the Athletics this week, including a 5-3 loss on Thursday. Shortstop Trevor Story provided a bright spot in that defeat, going 2 for 4 with a home run. Relievers Payton Tolle and Greg Weissert combined for five scoreless innings of relief.
Tampa Bay arrives with some momentum after taking three of four from the Toronto Blue Jays, including a 4-0 shutout victory Thursday. In that game, starter Shane Baz was stellar, allowing just two hits over five scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Center fielder Chandler Simpson went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and shortstop Carson Williams added a home run.
Despite their losing record, the Rays have played better of late, going 6-4 in their last 10 games. The Red Sox have gone 5-5 over that same stretch as they look to solidify their position in the wild card chase.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a close contest, favoring Boston by a score of 5-4.
Following this series, the Red Sox head to Toronto for a three-game set with the Blue Jays beginning Tuesday. The Rays will embark on a seven-game road trip, starting with three in Baltimore against the Orioles on Tuesday.
