Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — The Chicago Cubs will look to break out of an offensive funk and even their series against the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday at Great American Ball Park.
The Cubs (88-65) have been shut out in consecutive games, including a 1-0 loss on Thursday in which Cincinnati’s Hunter Greene threw a one-hit complete game with nine strikeouts. Chicago managed just one hit, a single by Seiya Suzuki, and wasted a stellar outing from starter Colin Rea, who allowed one run over seven innings with 11 strikeouts.
Chicago’s recent scoring drought contrasts with a successful stretch that saw them win eight of their previous 11 games before arriving in Cincinnati. They remain in the thick of the National League playoff chase.
The Reds (77-76), meanwhile, have won three of their last four and are playing the role of spoiler. Their pitching has been formidable against the Cubs, allowing only one run over the last 27 innings in the series.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the offensive woes are projected to end in a high-scoring affair, with a predicted final of Cubs 7, Reds 5.
The season series between the NL Central rivals has been tightly contested, with the Cubs holding a 6-5 edge. Their meetings have often been lopsided, however, with five games decided by five or more runs.
Following Saturday’s contest, the teams will conclude their three-game set on Sunday. The Cubs then return to Wrigley Field for a seven-game homestand against the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds will host the Pittsburgh Pirates for three games before heading to Milwaukee for a season-ending series against the Brewers.
First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. EDT.
