Cleveland Guardians at Minnesota Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — Bo Naylor snapped an eighth-inning tie with his second two-run single of the game, and the Cleveland Guardians extended their winning streak to eight games with a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night at Target Field.

The Guardians (82-71) won for the 13th time in 14 games to continue their late-season surge. Cleveland’s offense was held in check after a first-inning outburst until breaking through late against the Twins’ bullpen.

Cleveland struck immediately against Twins starter Pablo López. Steven Kwan led off the game with a single and, after a strikeout, José Ramírez walked. With two outs, Naylor lined a sharp single to right field, scoring both runners for an early 2-0 lead.

That was all the support Guardians starter Parker Messick would need. The left-hander dominated over 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out nine. Messick’s only blemish came in the sixth inning when the Twins tied the game.

Austin Martin led off the sixth with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Messick. Luke Keaschall followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Brooks Lee grounded out to score one run, and Royce Lewis singled to center to drive in Keaschall, knotting the score at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the eighth. With two outs and Cole Sands (4-6) on the mound, Ramírez hit a double. Kyle Manzardo was intentionally walked, and both runners then executed a double steal. Naylor worked a full count before lining another single to right field, plating both Ramírez and Manzardo to give Cleveland a 4-2 lead.

The Guardians added two insurance runs in the ninth. David Fry singled and later scored on a double by Kwan, who then came home on a double by Angel Martínez.

Jakob Junis (4-1) earned the win with two perfect innings of relief, striking out four. Cleveland’s bullpen combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out seven.

López took a no-decision for Minnesota, pitching four innings and giving up two runs on three hits. The Twins (66-87) managed just six hits total and saw a two-game winning streak snapped.

An announced crowd of 20,159 watched the game, which took 2 hours, 36 minutes.

The teams are scheduled to continue their three-game series on Saturday.
