Seattle Mariners at Houston Astros

HOUSTON (Interstat) — Eugenio Suárez hit his 47th homer, three other Mariners went deep and Bryan Woo pitched five effective innings before leaving unexpectedly as the Seattle Mariners beat the Houston Astros 4-0 on Friday night to take over first place in the AL West.

The surging Mariners have won 11 of 12 to wrest control of the division away from the Astros with eight games remaining. Seattle improved to 85-69, while Houston fell to 84-70 and into a tie with Boston for the final two American League wild-card spots, with Cleveland 1 1/2 games behind.

Julio Rodríguez gave the Mariners an immediate lead, launching a solo home run, his 31st of the season, off Astros starter Hunter Brown with two outs in the top of the first inning.

Suárez extended the lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning with his towering solo shot to left-center field. Victor Robles then led off the seventh inning with his first homer of the year, a drive to left field off reliever Craig Kimbrel. Josh Naylor capped the scoring with a solo homer to right-center in the eighth inning, his 20th.

That was more than enough support for Woo, the winning pitcher who improved to 15-7. He was dominant, allowing just one hit—a double to Carlos Correa in the fourth—while striking out seven and walking one over five shutout innings. He left the game after the fifth for undisclosed reasons.

The Mariners’ bullpen was flawless in relief. Eduard Bazardo followed Woo with two perfect innings, striking out two. Matt Brash allowed a single in a scoreless eighth, and Andrés Muñoz struck out two in a hitless ninth to seal the victory.

Brown was the hard-luck loser, falling to 12-8. He pitched well, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings while striking out nine. The Astros’ offense, however, was stymied all night, managing just three hits and failing to capitalize on opportunities, including a two-on, two-out situation in the fourth inning that Woo escaped with a strikeout.

The game was played in 2 hours, 42 minutes before a crowd of 41,471 at Daikin Park. The teams continue their critical three-game series on Saturday.
