Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Interstat) — The Toronto Blue Jays will look to rebound from a narrow defeat and maintain their push for the postseason when they face the Tampa Bay Rays in the finale of a four-game series Thursday afternoon at George Steinbrenner Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. EDT.
The American League East rivals have split the first three games of the set, with the Rays (74-78) taking the latest contest 2-1 on Wednesday to snap the Blue Jays’ (89-63) three-game winning streak. The series has been defined by tight pitching, with the last two games each decided by a single run.
Toronto, firmly in the playoff hunt, has won 10 of its last 14 games. Tampa Bay, playing the role of spoiler, has gone 4-6 over its last 10.
The Blue Jays’ offense was held in check Wednesday despite a strong start from Kevin Gausman, who allowed one earned run over six innings. Shortstop Ernie Clement provided a bright spot, going 2 for 3.
Tampa Bay’s victory was anchored by starter Ian Seymour, who tossed seven scoreless innings of four-hit ball. Closer Pete Fairbanks locked down the save, and center fielder Chandler Simpson drove in a run as part of a 3-for-4 afternoon.
Projections favor the visiting Blue Jays to close the series with a win. Interstat’s game simulator predicts a 7-2 Toronto victory, while its ELO rating system gives the Blue Jays a 54.3% probability to win. Toronto has been installed as a -1.5 run favorite, and the over/under for total runs is set at 8.
Following the series finale, the Blue Jays travel to Kansas City for a three-game weekend set with the Royals. The Rays will remain at home to host the Boston Red Sox for three games starting Friday. The two clubs are scheduled to meet again for another three-game series in Toronto next weekend to close out the regular season.
