Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Chicago Cubs will look to complete a three-game series sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon at PNC Park as they continue their push for the postseason.
The Cubs (87-64) have taken the first two games of the set, winning 4-0 on Monday and 4-1 on Tuesday. They have won four of their last five and hold a narrow lead in the National League wild-card race.
Chicago’s pitching has stifled the Pirates (65-87) in the series, allowing just one run and eight hits over 18 innings. Rookie Cade Horton was sharp in Tuesday’s victory, allowing one run over five innings with six strikeouts. First baseman Michael Busch provided the power, going 3 for 4 with a home run.
The Pirates have lost three straight and eight of their last 10 games, officially eliminated from playoff contention. Their offense has struggled mightily, scoring three runs or fewer in seven of those losses. Reliever Carmen Mlodzinski provided a bright spot Tuesday with three scoreless innings and five strikeouts.
According to Interstat, the Cubs are projected as strong favorites with a 59.4% probability to win. Their game simulator predicts a 6-1 victory for Chicago. The Cubs are installed as a -1.5 run favorite with an over/under of 8.
Following the series finale, the Cubs travel to Cincinnati for a four-game series starting Thursday. The Pirates have an off-day Thursday before opening a three-game weekend series at home against the Athletics.
