Cleveland Guardians at Detroit Tigers
DETROIT (Interstat) — The Detroit Tigers will look to rebound and protect their narrow lead in the AL Central when they host the Cleveland Guardians in the rubber match of a three-game series at Comerica Park on Wednesday.
The Tigers (85-66) saw a three-game winning streak snapped with a 7-5 loss to the Guardians on Tuesday, a defeat that trimmed their division lead. Cleveland (79-71) has won four of its last five and seven of its last 10, refusing to fade from the playoff picture.
Despite the recent loss, Detroit holds a commanding 6-3 advantage in the season series. The Tigers swept a three-game set in Cleveland in early July, but the Guardians have taken two of the first three games in this critical late-season set in Detroit.
Spencer Torkelson was a bright spot in the loss for the Tigers, going 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Casey Mize struck out eight over 5 1/3 innings but was tagged with the loss.
Cleveland’s offense was keyed by José Ramírez, who drove in a run as part of a two-hit night. The Guardians’ bullpen was dominant, with Tim Herrin striking out all three batters he faced in a perfect inning of relief.
The Tigers have been installed as pregame favorites with a -1.5 run spread, and the over/under is set at 8.5 runs. However, projections are mixed. Interstat’s game simulator predicts an 8-5 victory for the Guardians, while its ELO rating system gives Detroit a 55.2% probability to win.
Following Wednesday’s contest, the teams will meet for three more games next week in Cleveland. The Tigers continue their homestand with a visit from the Atlanta Braves, while the Guardians head to Minnesota for a four-game series against the Twins.
