Cleveland Guardians at Detroit Tigers

DETROIT (Interstat) — The Detroit Tigers, holding a firm grip on a playoff position, will host the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night at Comerica Park to open a critical three-game series between the American League Central rivals.

The Tigers (85-65) enter the contest with a seven-game lead over the Guardians (78-71) and are looking to build on their recent dominance in the head-to-head matchup. Detroit swept a three-game set in Cleveland from July 4-6, outscoring the Guardians 10-3. Overall, the Tigers have won four of the last five meetings, including a 5-0 shutout on May 25 in Detroit.

Cleveland arrives riding a wave of momentum, having won six of its last seven games. The Guardians took three of four from the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, capped by a 3-2 victory on Sunday. Bo Naylor provided the offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, while Slade Cecconi earned the win with 5 2/3 solid innings.

Detroit is also coming off a strong pitching performance, blanking the Miami Marlins 2-0 on Sunday. Keider Montero, Will Vest and Tommy Kahnle combined on a five-hitter.

Despite Cleveland’s hot streak, statistical models are split on the outcome. Interstat’s game simulator projects an 8-5 victory for the Guardians. However, the same outlet’s ELO rating system gives the Tigers a 56% probability to win. Detroit has been installed as a -1.5 run favorite, with the over/under set at 8.

This series is the start of a crucial final stretch for both clubs. Following this set, the Tigers will host the Atlanta Braves, while the Guardians travel to face the Minnesota Twins. The two teams will meet again for three games in Cleveland next week.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. EDT.
