Medicine Hat’s four-goal first period fuels rout of Tri-City

KENNEWICK (Interstat) — Medicine Hat scored four times in the first period, including two goals eight seconds apart late in the frame, and rolled to a 5-1 victory over Tri-City at Toyota Center on Saturday. The Tigers improved to 8-6 while the Americans fell to 6-9 in front of an announced crowd of 3,189.

Josh Evaschesen opened the scoring at 10:41 of the first period, taking assists from Yaroslav Bryzgalov and Dayton Reschny. Arvid Drott made it 2-0 just 10 seconds later, with Brayden Holberton assisting. The Tigers then broke the game open late in the period. Shaeffer Gordon-Carroll scored at 17:48 with helpers from Riley Steen and Liam Ruck, and Markus Ruck scored eight seconds later off a Gordon-Carroll assist to make it 4-0 after one. The first period also included coincidental penalties at 6:09, with Holberton receiving an unsportsmanlike conduct minor for Medicine Hat while Jaxen Adam and Alexander Laing each received minors for Tri-City. Liam Ruck was called for slashing at 6:38 and Evaschesen for tripping at 8:12 before the Tigers’ scoring burst.

Medicine Hat’s top star was Gordon-Carroll, who finished with one goal and one assist and three shots on goal. The 6-foot, 189-pound left wing from Salt Lake City, Utah, also helped set up the late first-period strike that pushed the lead to four. Drott added a goal and an assist with three shots. Markus Ruck scored and had two shots, while Kadon McCann also scored in the third period and recorded three shots. Evaschesen had a goal, four shots and two penalty minutes. Reschny, Steen, Liam Ruck, Holberton and Tyson Moss each recorded an assist. Holberton also had nine penalty minutes.

Tri-City’s lone goal came in the second period. Dylan LeBret scored at 6:52 with assists from Aden Bouchard and Grady Martin. The Americans generated some pressure with power-play chances after Medicine Hat penalties to Dayton Reschny and Luke Cozens, but they could not build on LeBret’s marker. LeBret later received a five-minute major for fighting, as did Holberton, during a chippy middle period. Holberton also received a boarding minor on the same sequence.

The Tigers put the game away early in the third when Kadon McCann scored at 1:51 from Drott and Moss. Medicine Hat managed the rest of the period with a comfortable lead. The teams combined for a series of penalties in the third, including minors to Yaroslav Bryzgalov and Luke Ruptash of Medicine Hat and Eli McKamey of Tri-City, but the score stayed unchanged.

Medicine Hat’s special teams and early pressure set the tone. The Tigers scored four times in the first period and never let Tri-City close within three goals after the opening frame. The Americans’ best stretch came in the second period, when LeBret scored and Medicine Hat took four penalties, but Tri-City could not cut the deficit further.

Gordon-Carroll entered the game with recent production, including a goal and three shots in Medicine Hat’s previous game at Spokane and an assist in each of his two prior contests. His goal and assist Saturday helped the Tigers secure their second straight victory. Drott and McCann also continued to provide depth scoring for Medicine Hat.

Tri-City fell despite a home crowd of 3,189 at Toyota Center. The Americans had limited scoring chances against a Medicine Hat side that built a four-goal cushion in the first period and protected it. LeBret’s second-period goal was the only breakthrough for Tri-City, which dropped to 6-9.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Tri-City 3, Medicine Hat 2. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Medicine Hat with a 77.1 percent probability to win. The total score of 6 went over the over-under line of 6.5.
