Umberger spins gem as Dash clinch series over Grasshoppers
GREENSBORO, N.C. (Interstat) — Grant Umberger struck out 11 over 7 2/3 scoreless innings, Carlton Perkins finished with four outs, and the Winston-Salem Dash beat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 2-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026, at First National Bank Field to win the South Atlantic League playoff series in Game 2. The Dash took the series 2-0, sweeping the set and ending Greensboro’s season. Winston-Salem improved to 76-57. Greensboro’s record is 82-53. The game, played before 4,123 fans, lasted 2 hours, 17 minutes. The Dash won the series 2-0 after also winning the opener 15-8 on Sept. 13.
Umberger, who improved to 13-7, allowed three hits and no earned runs while striking out 11. He struck out at least one batter in seven of his 7 2/3 innings, keeping Greensboro from mounting a sustained threat. He allowed a leadoff single in the first and a leadoff walk in the fourth but avoided damage. His recent form carried over from a Sept. 10 start at Bowling Green, where he also struck out 11 over 6 1/3 innings.
Jack Anker took the loss for Greensboro. He dropped to 6-6 after allowing two earned runs on three hits over 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Anker matched Umberger early, keeping Winston-Salem off the board through four innings. The Dash had scoring chances in the first, second and fourth but could not break through. Nick McLain walked in the first, Derek Cerda singled in the second, and James Taussig and Cerda produced singles in the fourth. Braden Holcomb grounded into a force out to end that fourth-inning threat.
The Dash finally broke through with two solo homers. Rylan Galvan opened the scoring with a solo home run to right-center. After Kaleb Freeman popped out, Nick McLain lined a solo homer to right. Galvan and McLain each finished 1 for 3 with one home run and one RBI. Those were the only runs of the game.
Greensboro’s best chances came early and late. In the first, Wyatt Sanford singled but was erased on a double play when Edward Florentino lined to second baseman Javier Mogollon, who threw to first baseman Kaleb Freeman. In the fourth, Eddie King Jr. walked and Axiel Plaz singled, but Tony Blanco Jr. reached on a fielder’s choice and King was thrown out at home on an unassisted play by third baseman Jeral Perez. Carlos Caro struck out to end the inning. In the seventh, Blanco singled but was thrown out at second by center fielder Nick McLain trying to stretch it.
Winston-Salem’s bullpen finished it. Ronaldo Gallo relieved Anker and struck out five over 2 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and no earned runs. Adolfo Oviedo pitched 1 1/3 innings with two hits allowed and two strikeouts. Greiber Mendez recorded two outs. Perkins, however, got the final four outs for his second save of the season. He allowed no hits and no earned runs while striking out three. He entered in the eighth, walked Edward Florentino, and got Eddie King Jr. to ground out, then struck out the side in the ninth, fanning Axiel Plaz, Yordany De Los Santos and Tony Blanco Jr. to end it.
Greensboro finished with three hits. Sanford, Plaz and Blanco each singled. Josh Tate went 0 for 3, and Richard Ramirez went 0 for 2. The Grasshoppers could not take advantage of their few opportunities, leaving runners stranded in the first, second, fourth, seventh and eighth. Winston-Salem had six hits. Along with the home runs by Galvan and McLain, James Taussig and Derek Cerda each singled, Braden Holcomb added a single in the seventh and advanced to third on a fielding error by center fielder Edward Florentino, but was left there. Winston-Salem left runners on base in the first, second, fourth, seventh and ninth.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Greensboro 7, Winston-Salem 6, and its ELO system gave Greensboro a 58.5 percent probability to win.
