Henry, Aces hold off River Cats late for series win
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — Tommy Henry pitched five effective innings and the Reno Aces rode an early offensive burst to a 7-4 Pacific Coast League victory over the Sacramento River Cats on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026, at Sutter Health Park. The Aces improved to 66-80, while the River Cats fell to 77-65. Reno finished with 12 hits, while Sacramento had six. The game took 2 hours, 33 minutes and drew 8,894 fans.
Reno seized control in the first inning. Santiago Espinal singled to second, and Tommy Troy reached on a fielding error by third baseman Parks Harber. Adrian Del Castillo followed with a two-run double to right field, scoring Espinal and Troy. Demetrio Crisantes then singled to left, moving Del Castillo to third, and Aramis Garcia grounded into a double play that brought Del Castillo home for a 3-0 lead. Henry kept Sacramento quiet through the first three innings, allowing only a second-inning single to Will Brennan and a Charlie Szykowny single before a double play ended the threat. The double play helped Henry escape further damage. Espinal scored once, and Troy scored in the first and again in the ninth after drawing a walk.
The Aces added a run in the fourth when A.J. Vukovich doubled to left and scored on Matt O’Neill’s single to right. Reno stretched the lead in the sixth when Kristian Robinson homered to center field. Anderdson Rojas delivered an RBI single in the eighth, scoring Robinson, and Garcia added an RBI single in the ninth to score Troy. Robinson finished 1 for 4 with a homer and an RBI, while Rojas had three hits and an RBI. O’Neill also collected two hits and drove in a run as Reno consistently answered Sacramento’s pitching changes.
Henry earned the win, improving to 6-10. He allowed one earned run on four hits over five innings, striking out two. Henry retired the side in order in the first and fifth, and he worked out of a fourth-inning jam. Dylan Ray, Juan Burgos and Kade Strowd each tossed a scoreless inning of relief, with each recording one strikeout. Joe Whitman took the loss for Sacramento, falling to 9-6. He surrendered three earned runs and 10 hits over 5.1 innings, walking one and striking out two. Braxton Roxby was sharp out of the Sacramento bullpen, striking out three over 1.2 hitless innings, while Tyler Vogel allowed one run in an inning of work.
Sacramento broke through in the fourth. Bo Davidson singled to center, and Brennan doubled to put runners in scoring position. Eddys Leonard grounded out to shortstop, scoring Davidson. The River Cats stayed within reach until the ninth, when they mounted a final rally. Diego Velasquez was hit by a pitch, and Thomas Gavello pinch ran. Bo Davidson singled, and after a force out moved Gavello to third, Brennan lifted a sacrifice fly to center. Leonard then hit a two-run homer to left-center, cutting the deficit to 7-4. Charlie Szykowny struck out swinging to end the game. Sacramento’s comeback fell short despite the late power.
Leonard went 1 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs for Sacramento. Brennan went 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Davidson added two hits. Reno’s Henry was the top star, recovering from a recent rough outing against Albuquerque on Sept. 11. The Aces won for the second straight night after beating Sacramento 6-4 on Friday. The River Cats had won three of the previous five meetings in the series. Reno finished with 12 hits and benefited from Harber’s first-inning error. Reno will look to continue its late-season surge in the series finale.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 4-3 Sacramento victory, and its ELO system gave the River Cats a 62.8 percent chance to win. The teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday.
