Wietgrefe, Cimillo power Indians in 15‑0 rout of Stripers

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (Interstat) — Connor Wietgrefe and two relievers combined on a three-hit shutout as the Indianapolis Indians routed the Gwinnett Stripers 15-0 on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026, at Coolray Field in an International League Triple-A game. Indianapolis collected 17 hits and scored in five different innings, while Gwinnett finished with three hits. The game took 2 hours, 21 minutes and drew 1,692 fans.

Wietgrefe earned the win with six hitless innings, striking out seven. He improved to 10-6. Drue Hackenberg took the loss for Gwinnett, falling to 5-3. Wietgrefe worked around two walks and did not allow a hit in six innings. He struck out at least one batter in every inning he pitched. His previous start came against Omaha on Sept. 11, when he allowed one earned run over 5 2/3 innings with four strikeouts in a win.

Indianapolis jumped ahead in the first. Mitch Jebb singled on a soft ground ball, Enmanuel Valdez singled to center, and Jhostynxon Garcia followed with a three-run homer to left field. Jebb scored twice in the early innings. The Indians added another run in the third when Valdez doubled home Jebb. They made it 5-0 in the fourth on Duce Gourson’s run-scoring single that plated Nick Cimillo.

The Indians stretched the lead in the fifth. Robert Hassell III singled, Mike Jarvis doubled him home, and Tyler Callihan followed with a two-run homer to right. That gave Indianapolis an 8-0 cushion. Rowdy Tellez walked in the fourth but was left stranded. Wietgrefe and the Indianapolis bullpen kept Gwinnett off the scoreboard, and the Stripers did not record a hit until David McCabe singled in the seventh.

The decisive burst came in the sixth, when Indianapolis scored seven times. Garcia singled home Gourson, Jarvis walked with the bases loaded to force in Valdez, and Callihan singled home Garcia. Cimillo then capped the inning with a grand slam to right field, clearing the bases and making it 15-0. Indianapolis sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning and finished with three home runs.

Cimillo finished 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs. Garcia went 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs. Callihan was 2 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs. Valdez added three hits, including two doubles, and one RBI. Jarvis went 1 for 2 with two RBIs. Hassell, Derek Berg and Jesus Castillo also contributed hits in a balanced Indianapolis attack.

Gwinnett could not solve Indianapolis pitching. The Stripers grounded into two double plays and were shut out despite a late double from Patrick Clohisy. Gwinnett’s double plays came in the seventh and eighth innings. McCabe and Brett Wisely also singled for Gwinnett. Tyler Uberstine provided 2 2/3 hitless innings of relief for the Stripers with two strikeouts. Cal Conley allowed two hits over one scoreless inning with one strikeout.

CD Pelham pitched two scoreless innings for Indianapolis, allowing two hits. Derek Diamond worked a scoreless ninth, giving up one hit and striking out one. The Stripers finished with three hits, all singles except Clohisy’s double. Indianapolis pitchers combined for 20 strikes, 46 balls and 20 balls in play. Gwinnett pitchers combined for 12 strikes, 43 balls and 12 balls in play.

Indianapolis improved to 74-71. Gwinnett dropped to 74-68. The Indians have won the first three games of the series, including 6-5 on Wednesday and 8-6 in 10 innings on Tuesday. The teams are scheduled to continue the series Friday at Coolray Field, with games also set for Saturday and Sunday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Indianapolis 6, Gwinnett 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave Gwinnett a 52.2 percent probability to win.
