File, Jung lead Toledo Mud Hens past Louisville Bats
TOLEDO (Interstat) — Dylan File pitched six strong innings and Jace Jung drove in four runs Thursday as the Toledo Mud Hens beat the Louisville Bats 5-1 in a Triple-A International League game at Fifth Third Field. Toledo won its third straight game in the series and improved to 72-71. Louisville fell to 62-79-1. The game took 2 hours, 28 minutes and drew 5,584.
File, who improved to 7-11, allowed one earned run on three hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked one. The right-hander gave up a home run to Will Benson in the fifth inning but otherwise kept Louisville off the scoreboard. File had lost his previous start on Sept. 11 at Iowa, when he gave up two earned runs over six innings in a 9-3 defeat. Jung and the Toledo offense backed him.
The Bats went down in order in the first. Arroyo lined out to center fielder Michael Siani, Arcia flew out to left fielder Justice Bigbie and Fletcher struck out swinging. Toledo also went quietly in the first, as Trei Cruz, Outman and Anderson grounded out. Louisville’s Noelvi Marte singled in the second, but Chavis, Benson and Urbaez were retired. Toledo did not score in the second despite a walk to Cal Stevenson.
Jung went 2 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs. Toledo opened the scoring in the third inning. Max Burt, Trei Cruz and James Outman drew consecutive walks, and Max Anderson followed with a bases-loaded walk that forced home Burt. Jung then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Cruz for a 2-0 lead. After Benson’s homer cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth, Jung doubled to right field to score Cruz. Jung doubled again in the seventh, driving in Outman and Anderson to extend the lead to 5-1. Anderson went 1 for 3 with an RBI and also scored a run.
Louisville finished with five hits and two sacrifice hits. Benson’s home run to right-center field in the fifth accounted for the Bats’ only run. Benson went 1 for 3 with one RBI. Noelvi Marte had two singles and was hit by a pitch. Edwin Arroyo doubled in the eighth inning, and Michael Trautwein singled in the third. Garrett Hampson twice moved runners with sacrifice bunts. The Bats put runners on base in the later innings but could not push another run across.
Toledo’s bullpen protected the lead. Enmanuel De Jesus pitched two innings, allowed two hits, gave up no earned runs and struck out two. He retired the side in order in the seventh. In the eighth, Arroyo doubled and Marte singled, but Chavis struck out to end the threat. Yilber Díaz worked a hitless ninth, striking out one and working around two walks. Díaz walked Benson and Trautwein but escaped when Hampson struck out and Arroyo grounded out. The Mud Hens held Louisville to five hits and did not allow an extra-base hit after Arroyo’s eighth-inning double. Toledo finished with six hits.
Louisville starter Jose Franco took the loss after allowing two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings without yielding a hit. He issued four walks in the third and was charged with both runs in that inning. He fell to 3-5. Kevin Abel followed with 2 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run on one hit while striking out four. Connor Phillips threw 1 1/3 innings, giving up one hit and no earned runs. Brandon Leibrandt added a scoreless inning with one hit allowed.
Toledo has won the first three games of the series. The Mud Hens beat Louisville 5-3 on Tuesday and 3-1 on Wednesday before Thursday’s victory. The teams are scheduled to meet again Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Fifth Third Field. Louisville’s next scheduled games also come at Toledo. Toledo improved to 72-71, while Louisville dropped to 62-79-1.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 6-5 Toledo victory before the game, and its ELO system gave the Mud Hens a 59.8 percent probability to win. The actual result was a four-run Toledo win.
