Chesapeake Baysox at Richmond Flying Squirrels
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — The Chesapeake Baysox will try to build on a lopsided win when they face the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, at The Diamond.
Chesapeake (64-67) won the series opener 11-3 on Tuesday as Vance Honeycutt hit two home runs and drove in two runs. Richmond (75-59) has lost seven straight and will look to snap the skid at home.
Charlie McDaniel is the probable starter for the Baysox. McDaniel enters with a 6-5 record. Richmond has not announced a starter. The forecast at game time calls for cloudy skies and a temperature near 73 degrees.
Honeycutt, Chesapeake’s center fielder, is the player to watch. He went 2-for-5 with two homers and two RBIs Tuesday at Richmond. He also had three hits, including a home run, and one RBI in a Sept. 6 loss to Portland. He has multiple hits in three of his past six games and has driven in seven runs over that stretch. Honeycutt has been one of the Baysox’s most productive hitters during the season’s final stretch, with power potential from the top of the lineup.
Tyler Vogel is Richmond’s player to watch. The right-hander threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts against Chesapeake on Tuesday. He has allowed zero earned runs in eight of his past nine appearances, giving the Flying Squirrels a reliable option out of the bullpen. He has recorded a strikeout in six of his past nine outings. His lone rough recent outing came Aug. 30 against Portland, when he allowed three earned runs in one inning.
Chesapeake has won six of the past 10 meetings between the teams. Richmond’s most recent win in the series was a 6-5 road victory at Chesapeake on Aug. 23. The Baysox also have recent momentum after Andrew Herbert and Caden Hunter each threw four scoreless innings in Tuesday’s victory. Herbert allowed one hit and struck out three, while Hunter gave up two hits and struck out four.
Richmond’s recent slide includes six straight losses at Akron and a 14-6 defeat Sunday. The Flying Squirrels have been outscored 58-20 during their seven-game skid. Their offense will try to break out against McDaniel and the Baysox pitching staff.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a final score of Chesapeake 6, Richmond 2. However, Interstat’s ELO system gives Richmond a 52.40 percent probability to win, suggesting the computer models are split on the matchup.
The teams will continue their series Thursday through Sunday at The Diamond. Richmond is scheduled to visit Erie on Sept. 15. Chesapeake will remain on the road for the rest of the series before returning home.
