Hillsboro Hops at Eugene Emeralds

EUGENE, Ore. (Interstat) — The Eugene Emeralds will try to extend their mastery of the Hillsboro Hops on Wednesday, Sept. 2, when the Northwest League rivals meet at PK Park.

Eugene (76-50) has won five straight head-to-head meetings, including a 7-5 decision Tuesday at PK Park. The Emeralds also swept a three-game home series from Hillsboro from Aug. 14-16 and won Aug. 13 in Hillsboro.

Hillsboro (61-66) enters looking to reverse that trend after Tuesday’s loss.

Tuesday’s game provided much of the matchup’s recent texture. Eugene shortstop Jhonny Level went 2 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs, and Robert Hipwell went 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Hillsboro’s Jakey Josepha was 3 for 5 with two RBIs.

Right-hander Rio Britton (7-5) is scheduled to start for Hillsboro. He will be opposed by Eugene’s Ubert Mejias (6-3). The forecast calls for 65 degrees with cloudy skies at game time.

Players to watch include two pitchers who faced each other Tuesday. Hillsboro’s Kyle Ayers allowed one earned run over five innings, giving up four hits with three strikeouts. Eugene’s Henry Lalane matched that effort by allowing three hits and no earned runs over five innings, with four strikeouts.

Hillsboro will need more offense after Tuesday’s loss, and the Hops have shown scoring punch recently. Before losing Tuesday, Hillsboro had won four of its previous six games. Eugene has been steadier, winning three in a row and seven of its last 10 against Hillsboro.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-5 Hillsboro victory, while Interstat’s ELO system gives Eugene a 61.5 percent chance to win.

The teams will remain in Eugene for another game Thursday before shifting to Hillsboro for a three-game weekend series, with games Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
