Hickory Crawdads at Charleston RiverDogs

AP Sports Preview

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — The Charleston RiverDogs host the Hickory Crawdads on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. at Joseph Riley Ballpark, with rain and 84-degree temperatures in the forecast.

Charleston (35-25) enters the game on a four-game winning streak against Hickory (31-27), having taken the first four of this six-game series. The RiverDogs defeated the Crawdads 1-0 on Friday night in a pitchers’ duel, following a 9-3 win Thursday and a 3-2 victory Wednesday. Charleston can clinch the series with a win Saturday.

The pitching matchup features Hickory’s Aidan Cremarosa (4-1, 2.89 ERA) against Charleston’s Dominic Fritton (3-2, 3.60 ERA). Cremarosa, a right-hander, has been the Crawdads’ most reliable arm, winning three of his past four starts. Fritton, also a right-hander, dominated Hickory on Thursday by allowing one run over 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts in a 9-3 victory.

Hickory’s Jesús Lafalaise is a player to watch. The right-handed pitcher has struggled recently, allowing nine earned runs over 9.1 innings in his past two outings against Charleston and Kannapolis. He last faced the RiverDogs on Thursday, giving up three runs on five hits in four innings. However, he produced a quality start May 28 against Salem, allowing two runs over six innings in a win.

Charleston’s Dominic Fritton looks to continue his strong stretch. Over his past three starts, he is 3-0 with a 3.12 ERA, striking out 21 in 17.1 innings. He allowed one run to Hickory on Thursday, four runs to Myrtle Beach on June 5 and four runs to Columbia on May 30.

The RiverDogs’ offense has been productive in the series, scoring 18 runs over the past four games. Hickory’s Braylin Morel went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Thursday’s loss. Charleston’s Brady Marget was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in that same game.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-3 Charleston victory.

Following Saturday’s game, the teams conclude the series Sunday at Joseph Riley Ballpark. Hickory then returns home for a six-game series against Columbia starting Tuesday. Charleston travels to Wilson for a six-game series starting Tuesday.
