Hickory Crawdads at Charleston RiverDogs
CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — The Hickory Crawdads and Charleston RiverDogs renew their South Atlantic League rivalry Wednesday afternoon at Joseph Riley Ballpark, with the first-place RiverDogs looking to snap a five-game series losing streak against the Crawdads.
First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. under partly cloudy skies and a game-time temperature of 86 degrees.
Hickory (31-24) sends right-hander Moises Morales (5-2) to the mound. Morales has been a steady force in the Crawdads rotation, though he did not factor into the decision in his last outing, a 5-3 loss to Kannapolis on June 7. He will face a Charleston lineup that has been held to two runs or fewer in four of the last five meetings between the clubs.
The RiverDogs (32-25) have not announced a probable starter.
The season series heavily favors Hickory. The Crawdads have won five of the six meetings, including a 2-0 shutout victory Tuesday. Hickory has held Charleston scoreless in three of those six games, outscoring the RiverDogs 21-9 overall.
Hickory enters on a modest downturn, having lost four of its last six games, including Sunday’s 5-3 defeat to Kannapolis. One bright spot in that loss was right-hander Evan Siary, who allowed two earned runs over five innings with four strikeouts. Siary has been especially effective against Charleston this season, tossing six shutout innings in a 1-0 win May 23. Over his last four starts, including a six-inning, zero-earned-run outing May 31, Siary has posted a 1.64 ERA.
Charleston snapped a two-game skid with a 5-4 home win Sunday over Myrtle Beach. Alex Wallace earned the save with four shutout innings of relief, scattering no hits and striking out one. Wallace’s performance was a stark turnaround from a disastrous outing May 28, when he allowed six earned runs in 1 2/3 innings. He has been inconsistent this season but remains a key bullpen arm for the RiverDogs.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-5 Charleston victory.
Following Wednesday’s game, the teams continue their six-game series with a 7:05 p.m. contest Thursday. The RiverDogs will then travel to Wilson on June 16, while Hickory returns home to host Columbia.
