Tampa Tarpons at Fort Myers Mighty Mussels
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — The Tampa Tarpons eye a four-game series sweep Friday night when they visit the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels at CenturyLink Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. under clear skies with a temperature of 81 degrees.
Tampa (14-15) has won three consecutive games against Fort Myers (16-13), all by narrow margins: 6-3 on Thursday, 4-3 on Wednesday and 9-8 on Tuesday. The Tarpons are 3-2 in their last five games overall, while the Mighty Mussels have lost three straight and four of their last five.
Right-hander Ramiro Villanueva makes his season debut for Tampa. The 0-0 pitcher will be opposed by a Fort Myers starter yet to be named, though right-hander Matthew Dalquist is a candidate after allowing one earned run over five innings in Wednesday’s loss to the Tarpons.
Villanueva takes the mound for a Tampa staff that has leaned heavily on its bullpen. Parker Seay has been dominant in recent outings, tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts in Wednesday’s 4-3 win. Over his last seven appearances, Seay has a 1.50 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings. He has not allowed an earned run in five of those outings.
Dalquist has been a steady presence for Fort Myers. In his last two starts, the right-hander has allowed just two earned runs over 9 1/3 innings with 12 strikeouts. He threw 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball in a 24-8 win at Daytona on April 30, then followed with five innings of one-run work Wednesday.
Shortstop Jackson Lovich went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Wednesday’s win, while outfielder Yasser Mercedes homered for Fort Myers.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-2 Tampa victory.
The series continues Saturday and Sunday before Tampa returns home for a six-game set against Dunedin starting Tuesday. Fort Myers travels to Bradenton for a six-game series beginning Tuesday.
