Tampa Tarpons at Fort Myers Mighty Mussels
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — The Tampa Tarpons and Fort Myers Mighty Mussels continue their six-game series Wednesday night at CenturyLink Sports Complex, with first pitch scheduled under cloudy skies and 79-degree temperatures.
Right-hander Matthew Dalquist (0-1) is scheduled to start for the Tarpons, who enter the game at 12-15 overall. Dalquist will be seeking his first win of the season after a tough outing in his last appearance. Fort Myers has not announced a starting pitcher for the contest.
The Tarpons defeated the Mighty Mussels 6-2 in Tuesday’s series opener, snapping a three-game losing streak. Tampa dropped a 7-6 decision to St. Lucie on Sunday despite a strong relief outing from Jose Ledesma, who pitched two scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Ledesma has been a key weapon out of the Tampa bullpen. Over his last seven appearances dating to April 8, the right-hander has allowed just two earned runs while striking out 16 batters in 9 1/3 innings. He has not allowed an earned run in six of those outings.
Fort Myers (16-11) has lost three straight and four of five, including a 5-2 defeat at Daytona on Sunday. Justin Mitrovich provided a bright spot in that game, throwing four scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits and striking out five. Mitrovich has been effective in limited recent work, posting a 0.00 ERA over his last two appearances covering 5 1/3 innings.
The Mighty Mussels have relied on strong pitching during their winning start to the season, but have struggled recently, allowing 34 runs over their last five games — all losses.
Tampa’s offense has been inconsistent but showed life Tuesday, scoring six runs on nine hits. The Tarpons have won five of their last seven meetings against Fort Myers dating to last season.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 Tampa victory, suggesting another close contest between the division rivals.
The teams are scheduled to meet four more times after Wednesday, including games Thursday through Sunday at CenturyLink Sports Complex.
