Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Syracuse Mets

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Lehigh Valley IronPigs and Syracuse Mets meet Sunday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium in the finale of a six-game series, with the first pitch scheduled under cloudy skies and a temperature of 48 degrees.

Lehigh Valley (16-15) is expected to start right-hander Brandon Waddell (2-0) opposite Syracuse (16-14). The IronPigs avoided a sweep Saturday with a 9-6 victory, snapping a four-game losing streak against the Mets. Syracuse had won the previous four games of the series by a combined score of 27-10.

Waddell enters with an unblemished record and will look to build on the momentum created by Lehigh Valley’s bullpen in Saturday’s win. Reliever Génesis Cabrera delivered two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, and he remains a key arm out of the bullpen. Over his last four appearances, Cabrera has not allowed an earned run in 5 1/3 innings. On April 30, he worked a scoreless inning in a loss, and on April 24 he threw 1 1/3 scoreless frames against Durham. Cabrera’s lone rough outing came April 19 at St. Paul, when he surrendered four earned runs in one inning.

For Syracuse, right-hander Jonah Tong is scheduled to start. Tong did not factor into the decision Saturday despite a dominant outing: six innings, one hit, no earned runs and six strikeouts. He has allowed two or fewer earned runs in four of his five starts this season. On April 26 at Worcester, Tong gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings; on April 21 he earned a win with 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball. He has struck out 38 batters in 25 2/3 innings.

Syracuse has won three of the first five games of the series. The Mets took the opener April 28 with a 10-4 win, then swept a doubleheader April 30, including a 7-0 victory in seven innings. Lehigh Valley’s win Saturday snapped the streak.

Lehigh Valley is 1-4 in its last five games overall, while Syracuse is 4-1. The IronPigs return home Tuesday to begin a six-game series against Buffalo. Syracuse opens a six-game home set Tuesday against Rochester.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-5 Syracuse victory.
