Tampa Tarpons at Lakeland Flying Tigers
LAKELAND, Fla. (Interstat) — The surging Lakeland Flying Tigers look to continue their dominance over the struggling Tampa Tarpons when the Florida State League rivals meet Wednesday night at Joker Marchant Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. under clear skies with a game-time temperature of 76 degrees.
The Flying Tigers (10-5) have won four straight against the Tarpons (5-10) this season, including a 6-2 victory Tuesday night. Lakeland has outscored Tampa 44-19 in those meetings.
A player to watch for the Tarpons is catcher Gregory Bozzo, who is coming off a powerful performance Sunday. In a 6-4 loss to Bradenton, Bozzo went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. He will look to spark an offense that has mustered just six runs over its last three games, all losses.
Lakeland will counter with reliever Jatnk Diaz as a key figure. Diaz tossed three scoreless innings of relief in a 5-0 loss at Fort Myers on Sunday. His season has been uneven, however, highlighted by a win against Tampa on April 4 where he allowed two earned runs over two innings.
The Flying Tigers’ pitching staff has been a strength, holding opponents to three runs or fewer in eight of their 10 wins. They aim to bounce back after being shut out 5-0 by Fort Myers last time out.
Tampa seeks to halt a three-game skid and reverse a troubling trend in the head-to-head series. Beyond Bozzo, the Tarpons will need more consistent production after dropping five of their last six contests.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projection favors a 5-3 Lakeland victory.
The game is the second of a six-game series between the clubs at Joker Marchant Stadium. The series continues through Sunday.
