Myrtle Beach Pelicans at Fayetteville Woodpeckers

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging Myrtle Beach Pelicans squad will look to continue its winning ways when it visits the struggling Fayetteville Woodpeckers in an afternoon game Wednesday at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Pelicans (9-6) have won five of their last six games, including a 7-3 victory over Kannapolis on Sunday. They will aim to even the series after dropping the opener to Fayetteville, 6-2, on Tuesday.

In contrast, the Woodpeckers (3-12) have lost 10 of their last 11 contests. Their only win in that span was a 7-2 victory at Augusta on April 17.

A key player to watch for Myrtle Beach is reliever Mason McGwire, who has been dominant lately. Over his last four appearances spanning 10 innings, he has allowed just one earned run on four hits while striking out 15 batters. He tossed four scoreless innings with five strikeouts in Sunday’s win.

Fayetteville will look for a spark from outfielder Anthony Huezo, who is 9 for 35 (.257) over his last 10 games with two home runs and five RBIs. He went 2 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs in Sunday’s loss to Augusta.

The weather in Lillington is expected to be ideal for baseball, with clear skies and a game-time temperature near 62 degrees.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Myrtle Beach 4, Fayetteville 2.

Following Wednesday’s contest, the two teams will meet again for four more games through Sunday.
