Columbia Fireflies at Charleston RiverDogs

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — The Columbia Fireflies and Charleston RiverDogs will conclude a heated six-game series Sunday at Joseph Riley Ballpark, with both teams looking to gain an edge in the early-season standings.

First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature of 77 degrees.

The series, tied 3-2 in Columbia’s favor, has been tightly contested. The Fireflies (8-6) took a 3-2 victory Saturday night behind dominant pitching. The RiverDogs (7-7) aim to salvage a series split on their home field.

Columbia will send right-hander Jose Gutierrez (0-1, 4.50 ERA) to the mound. Gutierrez seeks his first win of the season after taking a loss in his last outing.

A key player to watch for the Fireflies is reliever Darwin Rodriguez, who was stellar in Saturday’s win. Rodriguez threw four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six. Over his last three appearances, he has a 2.25 ERA with nine strikeouts in 11 innings.

For Charleston, right-hander Aidan Haugh is expected to play a pivotal role, likely out of the bullpen. Haugh started and took the loss Saturday, going six innings and allowing three earned runs. He has struggled in recent outings, posting an 8.44 ERA over his last three appearances spanning 13.1 innings.

Both teams enter the finale with identical records within the series and are separated by just one game in the overall standings. The Fireflies’ offense will look to build on Saturday’s performance, where catcher Hyungchan Um went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the finale projects to be another high-scoring affair, with a predicted final of Charleston 7, Columbia 6.

Following Sunday’s game, both teams will hit the road for new series. Columbia begins a six-game homestand against the Augusta GreenJackets on Tuesday. Charleston will travel to face the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers for a six-game set starting Tuesday.
