El Paso Chihuahuas at Tacoma Rainiers
TACOMA, Wash. (Interstat) — Carson Taylor’s three-run homer in the seventh inning erased a one-run deficit and propelled the Tacoma Rainiers to a 3-1 victory over the El Paso Chihuahuas on Thursday night at Cheney Stadium.
In a game dominated by pitching for six innings, Taylor delivered the decisive blow against El Paso reliever Jackson Wolf. With two outs and runners on first and second following a strikeout-wild pitch and an infield single, Taylor sent a 1-0 offering from Wolf deep over the right-field fence. The home run, his first of the season, instantly transformed a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead for the Rainiers before a crowd of 2,603.
The late offensive outburst made a winner of Tacoma reliever Blas Castaño, who pitched a perfect seventh inning to improve to 1-0. Alex Hoppe struck out two in a flawless ninth to secure his first save. Wolf was charged with the loss, falling to 0-1 after surrendering all three runs on two hits in his two innings of work.
For much of the night, the Chihuahuas seemed poised to secure their second win. They broke a scoreless tie in the sixth against Tacoma starter Gabe Mosser. Nick Schnell walked, advanced to second on a single by Marcos Castañon, and scored on a two-out RBI single by Carlos Rodríguez.
That lone run appeared it might be enough, as El Paso received strong starting pitching. Matt Waldron, making a rehab start, blanked the Rainiers over four innings, allowing three hits and striking out six. Sean Boyle followed with two more scoreless frames. Tacoma’s Mosser was equally effective, yielding just one run on five hits over six innings while striking out three.
El Paso center fielder Jase Bowen collected two of his team’s five hits, both doubles, but was stranded each time. The Chihuahuas went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.
The Rainiers managed only six hits but capitalized on their biggest opportunity. Following Taylor’s homer, Yosver Zulueta and Hoppe combined for three strikeouts over the final two innings to seal the victory, retiring all six batters they faced.
With the win, Tacoma evened its season record at 2-2. El Paso fell to 1-3, continuing a tough start to the season that has included three losses by a combined four runs. The two teams continue their series Friday night at Cheney Stadium.
