West Michigan Whitecaps at Lake County Captains

Cold, Wet Opener Awaits Whitecaps and Captains

WILLOWICK, Ohio (Interstat) — The West Michigan Whitecaps and Lake County Captains will brave a frigid, wet forecast to open their 2026 seasons on Thursday at Classic Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. EDT under ominous skies, with a game-time temperature of 38 degrees and rain expected. The three-game series continues Friday and Saturday.

West Michigan will send right-hander Justin Campbell to the mound. The Whitecaps are looking to build on a strong finish to 2025, having won their final game, 3-1 at Cedar Rapids on Sept. 16. Lake County, which lost its 2025 finale 4-0 to these same Whitecaps on Sept. 11, has not announced a starting pitcher.

Both clubs enter with 0-0 records. Projections suggest a tight, pitching-dominated contest. Interstat’s game simulator predicts a 1-0 victory for West Michigan, while its ELO rating system gives the Whitecaps a 53.3% probability of winning.

The matchup begins a long early-season stretch against division foes. Following this series, West Michigan returns home for a six-game set against the Great Lakes Loons starting April 7. Lake County hits the road for a six-game series against the Dayton Dragons beginning April 7.

For the Whitecaps, a quick start on the road could provide momentum before their April 7 home opener. The Captains aim to defend their home field and reverse last season’s final result against West Michigan.
