Norfolk Tides at Memphis Redbirds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Memphis Redbirds look to extend their perfect start when they host the Norfolk Tides in an afternoon game Wednesday at AutoZone Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. CDT under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature of 81 degrees forecast.

The Redbirds (2-0) swept a two-game series at Gwinnett to open the season. The Tides (1-1) split a pair of games with Nashville, including a 6-2 loss Sunday.

Memphis will send left-hander Brycen Mautz to the mound. Mautz earned a win in his first start Sunday, allowing two hits and one earned run over five innings while striking out six against the Stripers.

Norfolk is expected to counter with left-hander Quinn Mathews. The Tides’ initial probable pitcher listing also included right-hander Brandon Young.

A player to watch for the Tides is right-hander Levi Wells, who turned in a strong relief appearance Sunday. Wells took the loss despite pitching four innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out six against Nashville.

For Memphis, third baseman César Prieto, who went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs on Sunday, provides a key bat in the lineup.

The teams opened their series Tuesday with a pitchers’ duel, a game that was scoreless through nine innings. Details of that contest’s outcome were not immediately available for this preview.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-4 victory for the Redbirds.

Following Wednesday’s contest, the series continues through Sunday. Norfolk then returns home for a six-game set against Jacksonville beginning April 7. Memphis embarks on a six-game road trip at Charlotte starting April 7.
