Gulf Coast State vs Northwest Florida State

Preview: Gulf Coast State vs. Northwest Florida State Set for NJCAA Quarterfinal Clash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Interstat) — A familiar Panhandle Conference rivalry will determine a national semifinalist when the Gulf Coast State Commodores meet the Northwest Florida State Raiders in the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The No. 7-seeded Raiders (24-7) enter as a slight favorite against the Commodores (23-7) in a matchup of teams that split their two regular-season meetings. Northwest Florida State won 84-74 at home on Feb. 11, while Gulf Coast State answered with a 72-65 home victory on Feb. 25.

Both teams survived tight second-round games to advance. Gulf Coast State edged Indian Hills 72-70 on Monday behind 17 points from Devontes Cobbs and 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists from standout guard Trent Lincoln. A day later, Northwest Florida State dispatched Vincennes 76-62 powered by a 30-point outburst from guard Damarion Vann-Kelly.

Lincoln has been the engine for the Commodores, averaging 17 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists over his last five games, including a 25-point effort in an overtime win against Brunswick to reach the national tournament.

Vann-Kelly’s scoring punch provides a counter for the Raiders. His 30-point performance Tuesday showcased his capability to take over a game, adding another layer to a Raiders offense that averages 76.2 points per game.

The game projects as a contrast in momentum. Gulf Coast State has won four straight and 10 of its last 12. Northwest Florida State has won three consecutive games but endured a three-game skid in mid-February.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Northwest Florida State holds a 65.8% probability to win. However, the Commodores’ recent head-to-head victory and Lincoln’s steady all-around play suggest another closely contested chapter in the rivalry.

The winner will advance to Friday’s national semifinal.
