Walters State vs Southern Idaho

Preview: Walters State Battles Southern Idaho in NJCAA Quarterfinal Clash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Interstat) — A marquee matchup of national title contenders highlights the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship quarterfinals Wednesday as the No. 2-seeded Walters State Senators face the No. 3-seeded Southern Idaho Golden Eagles.

The game pits two of the nation’s most dominant teams this season. Walters State, the visiting Senators, arrive with a staggering 25-1 record, their lone loss coming in early January. Southern Idaho, playing as the home team on the neutral court at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, boasts a formidable 28-2 mark. Both teams are riding significant win streaks, with Walters State having won 15 consecutive games and Southern Idaho victorious in its last 11.

The showdown will feature a compelling battle between standout guards. Walters State is led by Taquez Butler, who posted 17 points, five rebounds and four assists in Tuesday’s 95-82 first-round win over Midland. He has been a consistent catalyst for the Senators’ high-powered offense, which has scored 90 or more points in nine of its last 11 games.

Southern Idaho counters with Ace Reiser, a dynamic playmaker coming off a spectacular 28-point, seven-rebound performance in Monday’s 73-66 victory over New Mexico. Reiser has been instrumental in close games, averaging 38 minutes and 18 points over his last six contests, all tight victories for the Eagles. His backcourt partner, Jalen Lyn, added 23 points in the first round.

While the offenses draw attention, the game may hinge on defense and rebounding. Southern Idaho’s Ben Thornbrue provides a interior presence, blocking three shots and grabbing 13 rebounds against New Mexico. Walters State’s Brian Carter recorded a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) in the win over Midland.

Southern Idaho has shown a knack for winning tight, low-possession games, with its last five wins coming by an average of 5.2 points. Walters State has largely dominated its schedule, winning by an average margin of 29.6 points during its current streak, but survived a 68-65 scare against Columbia State on March 10.

The winner will advance to Friday’s national semifinal. The quarterfinal is scheduled for a 7 p.m. EDT tip-off on March 25 as part of the championship tournament in Hutchinson.
