Monroe vs Trinity Valley

ATHENS, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by wild momentum swings and a suffocating defensive stand, Trinity Valley Community College edged Monroe College 78-75 in overtime Monday night in a men’s junior college basketball game.

The Cardinals, playing at home, survived a furious second-quarter rally by the Mustangs and a late-game collapse of their own before securing the victory in the extra period.

The contest’s most critical sequence did not occur in overtime, but in the final minutes of regulation, fundamentally altering the game’s outcome. After leading by as many as 18 points in the first half, Trinity Valley saw its offense stagnate completely in the second half. Monroe, capitalizing on the Cardinals’ drought, mounted a relentless comeback.

The Mustangs’ surge was fueled by a stark shift in defensive intensity. After allowing Trinity Valley to score 67 points through the first two quarters, Monroe held the Cardinals to just 11 points in the entire third quarter. This defensive pressure forced Trinity Valley into rushed shots and turnovers, disrupting an offense that had been efficient early.

Monroe’s Naceiar Kirksey and Tavien Tyler provided the offensive firepower during the comeback, hitting crucial three-pointers to chip away at the deficit. The Mustangs’ effort transformed a once-lopsided game into a nail-biter, setting the stage for the dramatic finish in regulation that forced overtime.

In the extra period, Trinity Valley’s composure returned. Key contributions from Armani Henderson, who finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and M.J. Wardlow, who added 16 points, helped the Cardinals rebuild a slim lead. Monroe, exhausted from its monumental comeback effort, could not find the scoring touch it had in the second quarter, managing only a single field goal in the overtime period.

Statistically, the game was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. Trinity Valley shot 47.7% from the floor, compared to Monroe’s 31%. The Cardinals also dominated the glass, outrebounding Monroe 48-34. However, Monroe’s aggressive defense forced 15 Trinity Valley turnovers and generated 13 steals, keeping them in the game despite their poor shooting. The Mustangs relied heavily on the three-pointer, making 16 from beyond the arc.

With the win, Trinity Valley improved its season record to 29-5. Monroe, which had won five of its last six games entering the contest, fell to 18-5.
