New Mexico vs Barton
High-Scoring Offenses Collide as Barton Meets New Mexico in NJCAA First Round
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Interstat) — A matchup of potent offenses will tip off the 2026 NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship on Saturday, March 21, when the Barton Cougars face the New Mexico Thunderbirds in a first-round game at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
The No. 9-seeded Cougars (24-9), champions of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference, enter the national tournament averaging 92.4 points per game. They will be tested by the No. 8-seeded Thunderbirds (22-6), who won the Western Junior College Athletic Conference regular-season title and boast a top-20 national scoring defense.
The game features two of the nation’s most dynamic scorers. Barton is led by sophomore guard Aris Rodriguez, who is averaging 32.3 points over his last four games. He erupted for 37 points and nine rebounds in the Cougars’ high-octane 111-103 loss to Butler (Kan.) in their Region VI final on March 14.
New Mexico counters with sophomore guard RJ Nance, a consistent offensive force who has scored 19 or more points in four of his last five outings. Nance posted 24 points and five rebounds in the Thunderbirds’ overtime loss to Howard (Tex.) in the Region V tournament on March 13.
Barton’s path to Hutchinson was marked by close victories, including a 96-95 win over Cloud County on March 10 and a 92-91 thriller against Independence on Feb. 21. Their offense has topped 100 points nine times this season.
New Mexico brings a more balanced attack, having won 10 of its last 13 games. In their recent loss to Howard, Grigorije Avramovic added nine rebounds and Ladji Coulibaly contributed 10 rebounds and two blocks alongside Nance’s scoring.
The Cougars will look to control the tempo behind Rodriguez and forward Noah Williams, who had 20 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the Butler game. The Thunderbirds aim to leverage their defensive discipline to slow Barton’s rhythm and advance to the quarterfinals.
Saturday’s winner will face the winner of the game between seed South Georgia State and seed Monroe College on Monday.
