Harford vs Monroe
MONROE, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Monroe Mustangs, riding a wave of dominance this season, are heavily favored when they host the Harford Fighting Owls in the NJCAA Region 20 Division I men’s basketball semifinals on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
Monroe (15-4), the region’s top seed, has defeated Harford convincingly in both regular-season meetings. The most recent was a 108-81 rout on Feb. 26, where sophomore guard Nico Pena exploded for 28 points in 32 minutes. Pena has been a consistent offensive force, averaging 18.3 points over his last three games.
The 15th-seeded Fighting Owls (6-11) enter as a significant underdog but carry momentum from an 87-70 home victory over Hagerstown on Friday. In that win, forward Trevon Morgan posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Morgan’s production, however, has fluctuated; he was held to just three points in 15 minutes in the late-February loss at Monroe.
Harford’s path has been inconsistent, with the team alternating wins and losses over its last six contests. To challenge Monroe, they will need major contributions beyond Morgan, such as from Theo Hess (16 points Friday) and Tre Powell (12 points, 7 rebounds).
The Mustangs’ arsenal extends beyond Pena. In the last meeting, Riley Dunn recorded an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double and Naceiar Kirksey dished out six assists. Monroe’s balanced attack and stout defense, which held Harcum to 58 points on Feb. 21, present a multifaceted challenge.
The stakes could not be higher, with a berth in the regional championship game on the line. History this season strongly favors the Mustangs, but the Fighting Owls will look to leverage their recent performance and tournament pressure to engineer a stunning upset.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Monroe Athletic Complex. The winner will advance to face either Harcum or Baltimore City in the Region 20 final.
