Modesto vs San Jose
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — A spot in the California Community College Athletic Association state championships will be on the line Saturday when two of Northern California’s top teams, the Modesto Pirates and San Jose Jaguars, meet in the 3CAA Northern California Regional Final.
The men’s junior college basketball showdown is set for 7 p.m. at San Jose City College.
Both teams enter with identical 23-win seasons, setting the stage for a high-stakes rubber match. Modesto (23-4), the visiting Pirates, narrowly defeated San Jose 57-52 at home on Dec. 5 in the teams’ only meeting this season. The Jaguars (23-6) will look to leverage home-court advantage to reverse that result and extend their season.
Modesto, riding a wave of dominant defensive performances, arrives after suffocating Cabrillo 65-46 in its previous playoff contest. The Pirates’ path included a tight 65-63 victory over Diablo Valley and a 105-79 offensive explosion against Sacramento City. Their four losses have been by an average of just 7.5 points, highlighting their consistency.
San Jose counters with potent offensive firepower, having averaged 86 points over its last three games, including a 78-64 win over Feather River last Saturday. The Jaguars have been formidable at home, with recent victories by 49 and 60 points. Their season includes a 103-point outing against Gavilan.
The matchup pits Modesto’s staunch defense against San Jose’s high-scoring attack. The Pirates will aim to control the tempo as they did in December, while the Jaguars seek to push the pace and unleash their scoring depth in front of a home crowd.
The winner advances to the CCCAA state final eight, making this a de facto championship game for Northern California. With nearly identical records, a recent head-to-head decided by five points, and a state tournament berth at stake, Saturday’s final promises a fiercely contested battle between two elite programs.
