Cochise vs Eastern Arizona

THATCHER, Ariz. (Interstat) — A pivotal men’s junior college basketball matchup with postseason implications is set for Thursday when the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters host the Cochise Apaches.

Eastern Arizona (18-11) enters with a slightly better record than Cochise (15-10), but the teams split their two regular-season meetings. The Apaches won the most recent encounter 76-71 at home on Feb. 21, while the Gila Monsters dominated the first matchup 81-55 on their home floor on Feb. 4.

The rubber match will feature key players on contrasting trajectories. Cochise guard Devin Falk-Ramirez is coming off a career performance, scoring 23 points with five rebounds in 40 minutes during an 80-63 road win at Yavapai on Feb. 28. That outburst followed a quiet stretch for the guard, who was held to just two points in 14 minutes against Eastern Arizona earlier this month.

For Eastern Arizona, forward Brad Ballinger has been a consistent force. He scored 20 points with four rebounds and four assists in a narrow 84-83 road win over Arizona Western on Feb. 28. However, he was limited to just one rebound in 25 minutes during the loss at Cochise.

Both teams have shown recent volatility. Cochise’s win at Yavapai was preceded by a 19-point loss at Central Arizona. Eastern Arizona’s thrilling win over Arizona Western snapped a two-game skid that included a 20-point home loss to Central Arizona.

The game will likely hinge on which team controls the tempo and capitalizes on its star’s performance. Falk-Ramirez’s scoring punch against Ballinger’s all-around play will be a central storyline as the Gila Monsters seek to defend their home court and the Apaches aim to secure a season-series victory.

Tip-off is scheduled for Thursday night at Eastern Arizona College.
