San Joaquin Delta vs Sequoias

VISALIA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Sequoias Giants, riding an eight-game winning streak and boasting one of the state’s most dynamic players, will host the San Joaquin Delta Mustangs in the first round of the Northern California Regional men’s junior college basketball playoffs on Wednesday.

The Giants (22-6), seeded among the region’s top teams, enter the postseason with considerable momentum. Their surge has been fueled by sophomore guard Mason Dorsey, who recorded a triple-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in Friday’s 95-66 rout of Columbia. Over the last nine games, Dorsey has averaged a near triple-double, demonstrating elite all-around playmaking.

Sequoias’ defense has been equally formidable, holding opponents to 62 points or fewer in five of their last eight victories. Their only loss since late January was a narrow 76-73 road defeat to Columbia.

The visiting Mustangs (12-12) present a contrasting profile, having alternated wins and losses down the stretch to finish at .500. They advanced with a 73-67 home victory over Folsom Lake on Feb. 20, preceded by an 87-85 overtime win at Diablo Valley. However, consistency has been an issue, with several losses by double-digit margins during conference play.

Delta will need a balanced scoring effort to challenge the Giants’ defense. In their recent win, Cameron Kelly led with 24 points while Javon Bragg posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The matchup pits Sequoias’ high-powered, Dorsey-led attack against a Delta team familiar with close games. The Giants won the only regular-season meeting between the Central Valley Conference and Big 8 Conference representatives, though details of that contest were not provided. Tip-off is set for Wednesday night at Porter Field House, with the winner advancing in the California Community College Athletic Association playoffs.
