Southern Idaho vs Salt Lake
SALT LAKE CITY (Interstat) — The College of Southern Idaho Eagles used a dominant second-quarter surge to pull away from the Salt Lake Community College Bruin Bears for an 83-61 victory in a men’s junior college basketball game Saturday.
The Eagles, who entered the contest with a 20-2 record, solidified their standing with a methodical performance, improving to 21-2 overall. Salt Lake fell to 9-16.
The game’s decisive stretch came in the second quarter. After a tightly contested first quarter that saw Salt Lake trail by just five points, 35-40, the Eagles’ defense clamped down and their offense found a consistent rhythm. Southern Idaho outscored Salt Lake 48-21 in the period, turning a narrow lead into an insurmountable one.
The most important sequence of the game occurred early in the second quarter, extinguishing any momentum Salt Lake carried from the first. With Southern Idaho leading 42-40, the Eagles forced turnovers on consecutive Salt Lake possessions. Ace Reiser capitalized with a steal and an assist on a Jalen Lyn dunk, sparking a 15-2 run over the next four minutes. That burst gave Southern Idaho a 57-42 lead and forced a Salt Lake timeout, but the Bruin Bears could not recover.
Southern Idaho’s efficiency was the story. The Eagles shot 47.5% from the field and a blistering 50% from three-point range, making 11 of 22 attempts. Salt Lake struggled offensively, connecting on just 37.3% of its shots and a dismal 5 of 25 from beyond the arc. The Eagles also committed only eight turnovers while forcing 12.
Jalen Lyn led all scorers with 26 points for Southern Idaho, adding six rebounds. Ben Thornbrue contributed 21 points, and Nathan Ahner filled the stat sheet with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Ace Reiser played a key all-around game with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Salt Lake was led by Lantz Stephenson’s 20 points. Jaxon Heiden provided eight points and eight rebounds.
Southern Idaho’s offensive rating of 111.3 points per 100 possessions starkly contrasted with Salt Lake’s rating of 83.0, underlining the gap in execution. The Eagles also shared the ball effectively, recording eight assists to Salt Lake’s five, and were more disruptive defensively with eight steals.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Southern Idaho, which also defeated Salt Lake on Jan. 10 and Jan. 24. The Eagles will next travel to face North Idaho on Feb. 21. Salt Lake’s next contest is at Snow on Feb. 19.
