Southern Idaho vs Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY (Interstat) — A surging Southern Idaho men’s junior college basketball team, ranked among the nation’s elite, will face a Salt Lake squad seeking consistency in a key regional matchup Saturday.

The Southern Idaho Eagles (12-1), whose only loss came to Odessa on Dec. 6, bring a seven-game winning streak into the contest. They are coming off a dominant 94-50 road victory at Colorado Northwestern on Thursday. The Salt Lake Bruin Bears (7-9) have alternated wins and losses in their last five games, most recently falling 90-69 at Snow College on Tuesday.

Southern Idaho’s success has been fueled by balance and efficiency. In Thursday’s win, Nathan Ahner led the way with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists in just 28 minutes. Ace Reiser added 11 points and Charlie Dimmock contributed 10 points off the bench. Ahner has been a consistent force, averaging 11.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists over his last three games.

Salt Lake will counter with forward Makuei Riek, who is coming off a double-double performance in a win over North Idaho last Thursday. Riek posted 18 points and 11 rebounds in that victory, showcasing his ability to impact the game inside. His production, however, has fluctuated, as evidenced by a four-point outing in the subsequent loss to Snow.

The Eagles have been formidable on both ends of the floor during their streak, winning by an average margin of 23.4 points. Their defense has held opponents to 60 points or fewer in four of those seven wins.

For the Bruin Bears, protecting their home court will be paramount as they look to build momentum against the region’s top team. Salt Lake’s last scheduled home game was a 102-62 victory over Eastern Wyoming on Nov. 12, 2021, according to available records.

Following this game, Southern Idaho will host Snow College on Jan. 15. Salt Lake is scheduled to host Colorado Northwestern on the same date.

Tipoff is set for Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026.
