New Mexico Military vs Western Texas
SNYDER, Texas (Interstat) — A dominant first-half offensive display propelled the Western Texas College Westerners to a decisive 78-51 victory over the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos in a men’s junior college basketball game Monday night.
The Westerners, evening their season record at 6-6, seized control early with a blistering 41-point first quarter and never looked back, handing the Broncos their seventh loss against seven wins.
The game’s decisive stretch came in the opening period, where Western Texas established a commanding lead that the Broncos could not challenge. After a slow start from both teams, the Westerners’ offense ignited behind the sharp shooting of guard Justin McCall and the all-around play of Isak Homelius. McCall connected on three 3-pointers in the quarter, while Homelius attacked the basket and drew fouls, contributing to a 41-point outburst. Despite a respectable 31-point quarter from New Mexico Military, the Broncos found themselves in a 10-point hole after just 10 minutes, a deficit that would only grow.
Western Texas continued its onslaught in the second quarter, adding 37 more points. The Westerners’ offensive efficiency was staggering, as they finished the game shooting 48.1% from the field and an impressive 48% from 3-point range, making 12 of 25 attempts. Their offensive rating of 114.8 points per 100 possessions dwarfed the Broncos’ mark of 71.3. Defensively, Western Texas was equally disruptive, recording 10 steals and seven blocked shots, with Calven Charles contributing three blocks. The Westerners forced 15 New Mexico Military turnovers, converting them into consistent scoring opportunities.
Homelius, the top star for Western Texas, led all scorers with 27 points in just 28 minutes of play. He was efficient from beyond the arc, making four 3-pointers, and perfect from the free-throw line. McCall provided crucial scoring support with 19 points, all of which came in the first half, including five 3-pointers that helped build the insurmountable lead. Anesu Dehwe filled the stat sheet with nine points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Rayan Fadika controlled the glass with a game-high seven rebounds.
For New Mexico Military, which shot just 32.7% from the field, Rushawn Greene led the way with 12 points. Joel Pinto added 10 points off the bench. The Broncos struggled to find any offensive rhythm against the active Western Texas defense and were out-rebounded 40-38.
The Westerners’ lead ballooned to as many as 27 points in the second quarter, with the final margin reflecting their comprehensive performance. The Broncos’ effort was hampered by foul trouble, committing 21 personals, which allowed Western Texas to attempt 23 free throws.
With the win, Western Texas looks ahead to a road contest against New Mexico on Thursday. New Mexico Military will aim to rebound at home against Howard (Tex.) on the same night. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Roswell, New Mexico, on Feb. 5.
