West Valley vs San Mateo

Preview of California Junior College Men’s Basketball: West Valley at San Mateo

SAN MATEO, Calif. (Interstat) — A marquee early-season showdown between two of the state’s top junior college men’s basketball teams is set for Saturday as the West Valley Vikings visit the San Mateo Bulldogs in the Tristan Hill Holiday Tournament.

Both teams enter with identical 9-1 records in their last 10 games and overall marks that rank among California’s best. The Vikings stand at 9-3 overall, while the Bulldogs boast a 9-1 record. Their only common opponent is San Francisco, with West Valley splitting two games (a 58-55 loss on Nov. 21 and a 64-56 win on Dec. 18) and San Mateo scheduled to face them in January.

West Valley arrives with formidable momentum, coming off a dominant 97-47 victory over Shasta on Friday. The Vikings’ offense has been potent, scoring 79 or more points in six of their wins. A key catalyst is William Amoah, who delivered a standout performance of 12 points and 16 rebounds in a win over Diablo Valley on Dec. 10. The Vikings’ three losses have been by a combined 15 points.

San Mateo has been equally impressive, with its sole loss a 100-76 defeat to Santa Rosa on Nov. 7. Since then, the Bulldogs have reeled off seven consecutive wins, most recently a 65-52 victory over Sierra on Thursday. Their defense has been a hallmark, holding opponents to 68 points or fewer in all nine victories.

The tournament setting adds a neutral-site flavor to the high-stakes matchup. According to Interstat’s game simulator, this contest is projected to be a nail-biter, forecasting a 100-100 tie.

The outcome could hinge on West Valley’s offensive firepower against San Mateo’s stifling defense. The Vikings will look to Amoah to control the interior, while the Bulldogs will rely on a balanced attack that has seen them win by an average margin of 22.2 points during their current streak.

Saturday’s winner will claim a significant resume boost and tournament momentum as both teams prepare for conference play in January.
