Santa Monica vs West Los Angeles
WEST LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a chaotic start and a frantic finish, the West Los Angeles Wildcats outlasted the Santa Monica Corsairs 81-75 in a men’s junior college basketball game Friday night.
The contest’s most pivotal sequence occurred not in the final minutes, but in its opening moments, setting a tumultuous tone that Santa Monica could never fully overcome. The opening tip led to an immediate and stunning anomaly: a scoring credit for a Jerrell McCready jump shot for Santa Monica was applied to the scoreboard with the game clock still reading 19:36, erroneously showing a 75-0 lead for the Corsairs. Officials halted play and corrected the score to 0-0, but the disruption seemed to linger for the visitors.
Capitalizing on the confusion and a slew of early Santa Monica turnovers, the Wildcats raced to a 10-0 lead before the Corsairs registered their first official points nearly three minutes into the game. Santa Monica spent the remainder of the night fighting uphill, a task made difficult by 19 turnovers and a West Los Angeles defense that recorded 10 steals.
Despite the disastrous start, Santa Monica, led by a game-high 30 points from Jerrell McCready, showcased resilience. The Corsairs shot a blistering 11 for 21 from three-point range, with Jaxon Rous-Smith contributing 12 points off the bench on 4-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Their shooting kept them within striking distance after trailing 44-33 at the end of a high-scoring first quarter.
West Los Angeles, however, maintained control behind a balanced attack and more efficient execution. Malachi Knight scored 21 points to lead the Wildcats, while Chase Coleman filled the stat sheet with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. The Wildcats scored 81 points on 86 possessions, an offensive rating of 94.6, outperforming Santa Monica’s 86.2 rating on 87 possessions.
The Wildcats also dominated in assists (10-6) and steals (10-6), converting Santa Monica’s mistakes into opportunities. Every time the Corsairs threatened, West Los Angeles had an answer, often from a different player. Michael Baba and Micah Williams combined for 14 points off the bench, and Jase Stewart added seven points and five rebounds.
Santa Monica made a final push in the last three minutes. Trailing 73-67, the Corsairs unleashed an 8-0 run, capped by a McCready three-pointer, to take a 75-73 lead with 2:43 remaining. It was their first lead since the game’s erroneous opening seconds.
The advantage was short-lived. West Los Angeles responded decisively, closing the game on an 8-0 run of its own. Knight scored six points during the final spurt, including a dunk with 10 seconds left to seal the victory, after the Wildcats had reclaimed the lead for good on his jumper with 1:54 to play.
With the win, West Los Angeles improved to 18-8 overall. Santa Monica fell to 5-21, dropping its sixth consecutive game. The Wildcats have now won both meetings between the teams this season, having also defeated Santa Monica 85-80 on Jan. 28.
