West Los Angeles vs Citrus
GLENDORA, Calif. (Interstat) — A California Community College Athletic Association men’s basketball showdown with championship implications is set for Wednesday when the state’s top team, the Citrus Owls, host the surging West Los Angeles Wildcats.
The Owls (23-1), whose only loss this season came in non-conference play, have been a powerhouse, averaging over 100 points per game during their current 10-game winning streak. They sit atop the conference standings and are ranked in the state. The Wildcats (17-7), winners of five straight, are one of the few teams to push Citrus to the limit this season.
These teams met in a classic just over three weeks ago, on Jan. 24 in Culver City, where Citrus escaped with a 95-92 overtime victory. That game figures to be fresh in the minds of both squads and provides the blueprint for Wednesday’s rematch.
A key matchup will feature two of the state’s premier guards. For West Los Angeles, sophomore Malachi Knight has been on a tear, averaging 20.0 points over his last five games. He scored 26 points with seven rebounds in the first meeting against Citrus. For the Owls, sophomore Leo Ricketts is the engine, coming off a 23-point, eight-rebound performance in a win over Bakersfield on Saturday. He scored 23 points and played all 45 minutes in the January overtime win over the Wildcats.
Citrus boasts the best record and most potent offense in the state, but West Los Angeles has the confidence of knowing they took the Owls to overtime on their home floor. The Wildcats’ recent streak, including wins over Antelope Valley and Los Angeles Valley, has solidified them as a contender. However, slowing down Citrus’s high-octane attack, which has topped 100 points seven times this season, presents a monumental challenge.
The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. PST tipoff at Citrus College. With first place in the conference on the line and a thrilling recent history between them, both teams are poised for a playoff-intensity battle.
