Long Beach vs Los Angeles Southwest

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — A stark contrast in trajectories will be on display Wednesday night when the Los Angeles Southwest College Cougars host the Long Beach City College Vikings in a California community college men’s basketball matchup.

The Cougars (18-8) enter the contest riding high, having won seven of their last nine games, including a decisive 95-81 victory over El Camino last Friday. They sit firmly in the upper tier of the conference standings. Meanwhile, the Vikings (4-21) are mired in a prolonged slump, having lost 12 consecutive games. Their last win came in early December.

The teams met just three weeks ago, on Jan. 30, with Los Angeles Southwest securing an 82-72 road victory. The Cougars will look to replicate that result behind the dynamic play of guard Demaree Collins. He is coming off a stellar performance against El Camino, where he tallied 17 points, five rebounds and two assists. Collins has been a consistent scoring threat, posting 23 points in a loss to Cerritos and 10 in a win over Compton earlier this month.

Long Beach’s hopes will largely rest on the shoulders of guard Lawrence Brown, who has been a bright spot during the team’s difficult season. Brown is capable of explosive scoring, evidenced by a 27-point outing at El Camino and a 19-point, 8-assist effort at Cerritos earlier this month. Containing Brown will be a key focus for the Cougars’ defense.

For Los Angeles Southwest, balance has been a strength. In the win over El Camino, Caron Smith added 25 points and Hosea Steele, Jr. contributed eight points, eight rebounds and three assists. The Cougars’ depth and winning pedigree present a significant challenge for the visiting Vikings.

The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Los Angeles Southwest College. Following this contest, Long Beach will host Cerritos on Friday, while Los Angeles Southwest will travel to face Compton.
