Oxnard vs Los Angeles Pierce
Preview: Oxnard Condors at Los Angeles Pierce Brahmas
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Two men’s junior college basketball teams seeking to halt lengthy slides will meet Saturday when the Oxnard Condors visit the Los Angeles Pierce Brahmas.
The California community college matchup, set for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Sophomore Night at Pierce, features teams with nearly identical struggles. Oxnard enters with a 5-18 overall record, while Pierce sits at 5-19. Both are coming off narrow road losses on Feb. 11.
The Brahmas won the first meeting this season, 84-74 at Oxnard on Jan. 21. In that game, Pierce’s Mandell Anthony was a central figure, a role he has maintained. The guard is coming off a 20-point, 5-rebound, 5-assist performance in a 74-64 loss at Santa Barbara. He will be the focal point of the Pierce offense.
Oxnard will counter with forward Ruben Jimenez, who is playing his best basketball of the season. Jimenez recorded a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds in the Condors’ last outing, a 58-55 home loss to Cuesta. His inside presence will be critical for an Oxnard team that has lost five straight games since its Jan. 21 defeat to Pierce.
The Condors’ skid includes several close contests, with three of those losses by seven points or fewer. Pierce’s recent path has been more difficult, with four consecutive losses by an average margin of 24 points, excluding a tight overtime defeat to Cuesta on Jan. 24.
Saturday’s game represents one of the more winnable remaining opportunities on each team’s schedule. For Pierce, the Sophomore Night ceremony could provide an emotional boost at home. For Oxnard, avenging January’s loss and breaking their prolonged losing streak is the primary motivation.
With Jimenez and Anthony leading their respective sides, the matchup may hinge on which supporting cast can provide more consistent scoring and defensive stops. Both teams will look to control the tempo and improve their execution in the final minutes of a game that projects to be closely contested.
