Orange Coast vs Irvine Valley
IRVINE, Calif. (Interstat) — The Irvine Valley men’s basketball team delivered an offensive clinic Thursday night, overwhelming Orange Coast College 97-58 in a California Community College Athletic Association game.
The Lasers, improving to 14-11 overall, seized control with a blistering first-half shooting performance and never relented. Irvine Valley shot a scorching 66 percent from the field for the game, including 52 percent from three-point range, while holding the visiting Pirates to just 37 percent shooting.
The most important stretch of the game came immediately after tipoff, as Irvine Valley weathered an early barrage of missed shots from both teams to establish a dominant rhythm. After a series of opening possessions filled with turnovers and misses, the Lasers’ Nate Tuttle broke the seal with a layup nearly 90 seconds into the contest. That sparked a 13-2 run over the next two minutes, capped by a Sam Meza-Tallada steal and layup, that gave Irvine Valley an early 13-7 lead it would never surrender. The sequence set the tone for a half defined by Laser efficiency and Pirate struggles, as Irvine Valley built a 47-30 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Irvine Valley’s offensive execution was nearly flawless. The Lasers scored 97 points on 67 possessions, an offensive rating of 144.5, and assisted on 10 of their 37 made field goals. They also forced 15 Orange Coast turnovers, converting them into numerous transition opportunities.
Sam Meza-Tallada led all scorers with 21 points for Irvine Valley, adding five assists and three steals. Nate Tuttle provided 11 points and seven assists, while Matt Mowers and Ahmad Alhammouri each chipped in 13 points. The Lasers’ depth was evident as Yanis Aldeguer scored 12 points off the bench.
Orange Coast, which fell to 1-25, was led by Chris Obiajulu’s 15 points and five rebounds. Jayden Baude added 12 points. The Pirates were hampered by cold shooting from beyond the arc, making just 7 of 30 attempts.
The victory completed a season sweep for Irvine Valley, which defeated Orange Coast 79-60 on Jan. 21. The Lasers next travel to face Santa Ana on Wednesday. Orange Coast will host Fullerton the same night.
