Riverside vs Santa Ana
SANTA ANA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Riverside men’s basketball team avenged a narrow loss from three weeks prior with a commanding 77-61 victory over Santa Ana on Thursday night in a California junior college matchup.
The game’s decisive stretch came early in the second quarter. Leading 49-34 at halftime, the Tigers opened the third period with a 16-2 run that effectively put the game out of reach. Riverside’s defense fueled the surge, forcing five Santa Ana turnovers in the quarter’s first four minutes. The Dons, who entered the game with an 18-6 record and were favored by statistical projections, managed just two points in that span on free throws by Serigne Saliou Mbaye.
Riverside guard Kollen Murphy, the game’s top performer, was instrumental throughout, scoring a game-high 20 points. His back-to-back 3-pointers during the second-quarter run, along with a steal that led to a transition opportunity, helped balloon the Tigers’ lead to 65-40. The Dons never recovered, unable to cut the deficit below 16 points the rest of the way.
The Tigers’ win was a stark reversal from the teams’ last meeting on Jan. 21, when Santa Ana escaped with a 64-62 victory. This time, Riverside controlled the game with superior efficiency and ball security. The Tigers scored 77 points on just 69 possessions, an offensive rating of 111.5, while limiting Santa Ana to 61 points on 71 possessions, an 85.4 rating. Riverside committed only nine turnovers, capitalizing on 17 Santa Ana giveaways to score 19 points off those mistakes.
While Murphy led the scoring, Riverside’s balance was evident. Tylon Williams added 10 points and six assists, and Matthias Tinker provided a spark off the bench with nine points. Kavon Ray also scored nine points, all on 3-pointers in the second quarter.
Santa Ana was led by Joshua Garland’s 15 points and seven rebounds. Mbaye added 14 points, and Christien Jimenez scored 13, but the Dons struggled mightily from the field. They shot just 33.9% overall and a frigid 17.4% from 3-point range, missing 19 of their 23 attempts from beyond the arc.
Riverside improved to 15-10 with the win, while Santa Ana fell to 18-7. Both teams continue conference play next Wednesday, with Riverside hosting Cypress and Santa Ana hosting Irvine Valley.
