Los Angeles City vs East Los Angeles
EAST LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in trajectories will be on display Wednesday when the East Los Angeles Huskies host the Los Angeles City Cubs in a California Community College men’s basketball matchup.
The Huskies (14-9) enter as one of the region’s hotter teams, having won five of their last six games before a 66-55 road loss to West Valley on Monday. They will look to rebound quickly and continue their push up the conference standings. The Cubs (3-20), meanwhile, are mired in a prolonged slump, having lost 10 of their last 11 contests, including a 77-60 defeat at Pasadena City last Friday.
East Los Angeles dominated the first meeting this season, routing Los Angeles City 88-60 on Jan. 23. Huskies forward Imani Herring was instrumental in that victory, posting 13 points, five rebounds and three assists in just 23 minutes. Herring has been a consistent force, averaging 12.2 points and 6.4 rebounds over her last five games, including a 20-point, 9-rebound performance in a win over Mount San Antonio on Feb. 6.
For Los Angeles City, forward Devean Mpoupe-Singui represents the primary source of resistance. Despite the team’s struggles, Mpoupe-Singui has recorded two double-doubles in the last month and is coming off a 16-point, 6-rebound effort against Pasadena City. In the Jan. 23 loss to the Huskies, he was limited to nine points and seven rebounds.
The Huskies’ recent success has been built on balanced scoring and defensive pressure, while the Cubs have been plagued by offensive inconsistency, failing to reach 70 points in six of their last seven games. East Los Angeles will aim to control the tempo and exploit its advantages in the paint, where Herring’s versatility poses a constant threat.
Wednesday’s contest tips off at 7 p.m. PST at East Los Angeles College. Following this game, the Huskies will prepare to host Rio Hondo on Friday, while the Cubs will face Los Angeles Trade Tech.
