Antelope Valley vs Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — A key California community college men’s basketball rematch is set for Saturday when the Bakersfield Renegades host the Antelope Valley Marauders.

The Renegades (12-10) will seek to avenge a 93-67 road loss to the Marauders (10-10) on Jan. 14. That result is part of a recent surge for Antelope Valley, which has won four of its last seven games.

A major factor in that stretch has been the play of sophomore guard Mister Burnside. He dominated the first meeting against Bakersfield, posting 20 points, 11 rebounds and two assists. Burnside is averaging 20.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists over his last seven contests, including a 24-point, nine-rebound effort in a narrow 77-83 loss to Citrus on Wednesday.

Bakersfield looks to rebound from a 90-82 road loss to West Los Angeles on Wednesday. The Renegades had won three straight prior to that defeat. They are led by forward Zykiar Henderson, who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds in the loss. Henderson, however, was held to just six points and nine rebounds in the January loss to Antelope Valley.

The Marauders’ recent success has been fueled by strong guard play. In the loss to Citrus, Trovary Cavil added 19 points and Ripine Vagaia scored 15. Antelope Valley’s offense has topped 90 points in three of its last six games.

Bakersfield will need to improve its defensive intensity after allowing 90 points in its last outing. The Renegades’ offense has shown potency, scoring 96 points in a win over Los Angeles Valley on Jan. 24, but consistency has been an issue.

Saturday’s matchup carries weight for positioning within the conference as the regular season enters its final weeks. Following this game, Antelope Valley hosts West Los Angeles on Feb. 11, while Bakersfield prepares to host Citrus on Feb. 14.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST at Bakersfield College’s Gil Bishop Sports Center.
