Rio Hondo vs Los Angeles Trade Tech

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — A rematch of a double-overtime thriller highlights the California junior college men’s basketball slate Friday when the Los Angeles Trade Tech Beavers host the Rio Hondo Roadrunners.

The teams last met on Jan. 21 in Whittier, where the Beavers outlasted the Roadrunners 117-109 in a marathon contest. Los Angeles Trade Tech (11-11) will look to complete the regular-season sweep, while Rio Hondo (8-13) seeks revenge and a .500 conference record.

The matchup features two of the region’s most productive players. Rio Hondo guard Bobby Reyes is coming off a 23-point, 5-assist performance in an 87-70 road win over Los Angeles City last Friday. In the first meeting against Trade Tech, Reyes logged 47 minutes and scored 29 points with 11 rebounds and 5 assists.

He will be matched by Beavers’ forward Will Smith III, who dominated that Jan. 21 game with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Smith III is averaging a double-double in his last four contests, including a 25-point, 11-rebound effort in an overtime loss to Mount San Antonio last Friday.

The Roadrunners have struggled for consistency, alternating wins and losses in their last six games. Their victory over L.A. City showcased a balanced attack, with Matthew Rodriguez adding 21 points and 8 rebounds alongside Reyes.

The Beavers had won four straight before the narrow OT loss to Mount San Antonio. Their recent success has been built on defense, holding opponents to an average of 66 points during that win streak prior to the setback.

Friday’s result will carry weight in the conference standings as both teams enter a crucial February stretch. Rio Hondo visits East Los Angeles next Friday, while Los Angeles Trade Tech travels to L.A. City on the same day.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Los Angeles Trade Tech College.
