Gavilan vs Monterey Peninsula

Struggling Gavilan Seeks Reversal Against Monterey Peninsula in Coastal Clash

MONTEREY, Calif. (Interstat) — The Monterey Peninsula College Lobos will look to sweep the season series when they host the reeling Gavilan College Rams in a California Community College men’s basketball matchup on Friday, Feb. 6.

The Lobos (8-15) enter with momentum from a narrow 70-67 road victory over Cabrillo on Jan. 30. Meanwhile, the Rams (1-21) are mired in a deep slump, coming off a 103-43 defeat at San Jose on the same date. Gavilan’s lone win this season was a 67-60 home victory over Hartnell on Jan. 23.

History heavily favors Monterey Peninsula in this rivalry. When the teams met in Gilroy on Jan. 14, the Lobos dominated, securing a 68-40 win. Gavilan’s offense has consistently struggled, failing to reach 50 points in six of its last seven contests, including the previous meeting.

Monterey Peninsula’s recent form shows resilience, with close losses to Foothill and San Jose preceding their upset of Cabrillo. The Lobos’ defense will aim to replicate its January performance against Gavilan, which sparked a current three-game winning streak.

For the Rams, the focus will be on finding any offensive rhythm to support a defense that has allowed an average of 92.5 points over its last four games. The team’s challenging season includes losses by 40, 53, 40, and 60 points in recent weeks.

Following this contest, Monterey Peninsula continues a tough conference stretch, visiting San Jose on Feb. 11. Gavilan returns home to host Cabrillo on Feb. 11, seeking to end a losing streak that has defined its season.

Tip-off is set for Friday night at Monterey Peninsula College.
